Mr Steven Parks
Hello all, my name is Steven Parks and I am a recent University College London graduate, graduating with first class honours in my Masters specialising in Genetics and Organic Chemistry. I will be studying for my PhD in Genetics next year and would like to go on to become an academic researcher within a University institution.
I am 22 years old and have been tutoring for several years at both GCSE and A-Level. I am an approachable and personable tutor and believe that my age can help me to relate to my tutees and be a good role-model for what hard work can achieve.
Tutoring experience
I have been tutoring since the age of 16, I started working with younger children, (aged 6-14) tutoring Maths and English and found that I had a skill with tailoring my tutoring style to match the needs of my students. Since then I have had a great deal of success tutoring Biology, Chemistry and Maths at GCSE and A-Level alongside my Masters degree at University College London, helping several students achieve top grades at both GCSE and A-Level. As well as private tuition, I have been involved in a variety of community outreach programmes aimed at motivating students to pursue a career in Science, something which I have a great interest in. However I believe that the greatest experience comes in the fact that I have recent first-hand experience of studying for my A-Levels and degree and can relate to the struggles of my students. I achieved excellent grades throughout my A-levels and degree and believe that this experience is key in helping my tutees to do so too.
Approach to tutoring
Being a student of science, my approach to tutoring is methodical and revolves around a combination of wrote learning and ability to apply this knowledge outside of the textbook. I try to extend my student's learning outside of what they are expected to know, as I believe that this helps students to have a genuine interest in the subject they are learning, which will always result in greater achievement. After acquiring this knowledge however, the most important step is to practise, which is why I utilise a variety of resources including past-paper question banks and e-learning resources. This combination of practical learning and repetition of questions from my own experience has provided the best results and is something which I greatly believe in.
