I left state school education at the end of May 2011 because I became totally disillusioned by the ever-surmounting reporting, assessment requirements and associated paperwork, continual behaviour related problems and disruptions to lessons that I had painstakingly planned and prepared. I just wanted to teach!!
I started tutoring as a bit of “light relief” from the madness of a school environment. I made the decision very soon after, that this was the way I wanted to go for the future...working with pupils who WANTED to learn. Both parties (me AND pupil) were then MORE than prepared to make every effort to work hard to gain the results they wanted to achieve.

Tutoring experience

Having obtained a degree in Chemistry, I have always had a keen interest in maths, science and ICT, and particularly enjoy teaching these subjects. I am fully up to date with the GCSE maths and science syllabi of several exam boards and keep up to date with the ever-changing requirements. I currently tutor GCSE students who attend various schools in Worcestershire, and, as a consequence, I am familiar with OCR, AQA and Edexcel Examination boards. I also teach iGCSE mathematics, biology and physics. I also enjoy teaching English, particularly helping children to develop, enhance and improve their reading comprehension and writing skills.

Approach to tutoring

My aim is to create a friendly, non-pressured approach to learning. I realise that it is vital to build the self confidence of each of my students and to ensure a clear understanding of basic skills. I assess the children carefully through questioning and discussion to identify each child's misconceptions and weaknesses. I then use a range of strategies and explanations appropriate to that child's abilities. I ensure that the student works at his/her own pace This structured approach leads to growing understanding and confidence enabling the student to make good and sometimes rapid progress. Tutor sessions are available in the student's own home (subject to petrol charge) or mine, wherever your child feels most comfortable and at ease.
