I have been teaching mathematics for over 19 years now and particularly excel at helping students who struggle with the subject to become more confident. I am a GCSE specialist and the majority of my students are those preparing for their GCSE examinations.

Tutoring experience

My entire career was spent in the maths department of St. Mary's R.C. High School in Hereford. It was such a fantastic school that I never wanted to move on. I became involved in teaching problem solving to year 5 and 6 students as an outreach programme. I also became Head of Key Stage 4 mathematics for the last three years of my career there. I particularly enjoy teaching those students who find the subject difficult. I love the challenge of breaking difficult concepts down into easier chunks of learning. There is no greater satisfaction than when a student tells you that they really enjoy their lessons and are finally understanding the subject.

Approach to tutoring

For GCSE students I always start by providing them with a copy of my priority GCSE topic list. They then select up to ten topics which they feel are their weakest. We then start work on these straight away to help build their confidence and enjoyment of the subject. We can also review work being covered in school and complete practice papers to help students prepare for mock and GCSE examinations. It is a very similar approach with my Key stage 3 students and I am guided very much with what is the in the best interests of the student. At the end of every lesson I email a copy of the work completed to the student so that they can use it for revision purposes. This is very popular with the students.
